Cellular respiration is the biochemical breakdown of a chemical substrate, such as glucose sugar, or fat, through oxidation. It is known as aerobic respiration, if the substrate is broken down, ultimately in the presence of oxygen, in which case oxygen accepts electrons which are transferred from the substrate through a series of biochemical and biophysical steps. It is known as anaerobic respiration if electrons are transferred from the substrate to an acceptor other than oxygen.http://www.healthtec-software.com/emr.htm
