What happens to an extended warranty if a company goes out of business?

This depends fully on the company in question and your specific extended warranty.  In most cases (so long as your warranty was from a major retailer) you will be safe, in that the warranty is most likely backed by a 3rd party.  A current example that shows exactly this would be Circuit City:

Usually the company will not uphold their extended warranty. One example is The Sharper Image, as they are not honoring extended warranties through the company itself since it is no longer in business. However, I believe they sold its warranties to a new company to handle them. If this is the case, then you can get the extended warranty from the new company. If the manufacturer has a warranty, you should be able to get the manufacturer warranty.
