What happens to all the letters addressed to Santa Claus?

Is there a giant warehouse full of them somewhere? That would be appropriate if the warehouse was at the North Pole.
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

First step is they obviously go to the local post office, and then to the regional office. From there they are collected for Operation Santa Claus -- http://www.operationlettertosanta.com/Pages/story_1.htm
For New York --

For California --
Operation Santa Claus

Are you suggesting Santa doesn't get them? I mean, Santa reads them and files them away...or recycles them. Right?

Right?!?!?!!

I believe he does recycle. If you check out the Green Christmas page on Mahalo, you can actually see how big his ecological footprint is. It's surprisingly small compared to most regular people.

Most of them probably wind up at a Mail Recovery Center, better known as a "Dead Letter Office."

More and more, though, charitable groups (like "Toys for Tots" or "Secret Santa") are actually collecting these letters and trying to help out some of the kids who send them with gifts or holiday surprises.

There are even some private businesses set up that will send kids personalized letters from the North Pole answering their requests. One I've read about recently is "The North Pole Secretary."
