What happens if you don't fill out a census form?

Tip for best answer: M$0.75
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

US Code Title 13 Census http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/13/

Title 13 Chapter 7 Sub Chapter 2 § 221 Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers states the following as the penalties for not answering the census questions or answering the census questions falsely

~quote
(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.
(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.
~endquote

So it looks like if you refuse to answer the 2010 census questions your penalty could be, if enforced at the maximum, a $100.00 fine and if you do answer the questions but lie in your answers then you could be fined $500.00 if the maximum penalty is enforced.

They will come and ask you the questions personally face to face. If they can't reach you after a few tries, they will ask your nearest neighbor for the information as best as they can provide. I work for the Census and know how it works.

DEATH! (no, no jusst kidding, I couldn't help myself.)

It's really about two things: money and power. First, the census affects the number of seats your state may occupy in the U.S. House of Representatives. Second, the federal and state government allocates money to areas based on population. Quoting follows:

"In fact, the information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services like:

* Hospitals
* Job training centers
* Schools
* Senior centers
* Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
* Emergency services"

If you don't fill out the census, you may be changing the face of your community.
More at the source.
Cheers!
