Secretariat had retired after a very succesful career as a racing horse. He was euthanised in 1989 after being diagnosed with laminitis, which is a very painful and incurable hoof condition. He died on October 4, and at that time was 19 years old.
After his death, Secretariat was buried at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. In contast to most racing horses, he was buried whole. Normally, only the heart, head and hoofs of a racing horse are buried, the rest is cremated.
In a few weeks, on October 8, the movie Secretariat will be released in theathers, which will allow you to see his entire life.
