Benito Mussolini was captured by Italian partisan troops on the 27th of April along with his mistress and a number of high ranking Fascist officials. Mussolini and his companions were attempting to escape into Switzerland as the German defensive front was collapsing all over Europe.
On the 28th Mussolini was shot multiple times in the chest by Walter Audisi under orders from the National Liberation Committee (the Italian partisan resistance). The execution took place in the small village of Giulino di Mezzegra. Later that night Mussolini's mistress and other members of the party were shot by firing squad.
The following day the bodies were taken south to the Piazza Loreto in Milan, where they were hung upside down on meat hooks from the roof of a gas station.
