What happened in the 1972 Olympics gold medal basketball game?

I heard Doug Collins and Chris Weber talking about a situation in 72, what is the background story to it?

Doug Collins of America sank two free throws with 3 seconds on the clock to put USA up 50-49 at the buzzer. The Soviet coaches charged the scorers' table, saying that they called a timeout at the point of the foul (under the rules at the time, the timeout would have been granted between the two free throws.)

The officials decided to restart play with 3 seconds on the clock, but the clock had not reset by the time play had restarted. The officials noticed and sounded the buzzer for a timeout just as the Soviets were (unsucessfully) attempting a court-length pass.

The officials then decided to restart play again with 3 seconds on the clock; the Soviets made their pass, handing the Americans their first ever Olympic loss.

The Americans unsuccessfully appealed to the IOC (the decision was split, 3-2 in favor of the Soviets, along Cold War lines) stating that the second restart never should have happened. To this day, they have not accepted their silver medals (which now sit in a vault in Switzerland.)

"Gold Medal Match controversy

The 1972 Olympic men's basketball gold medal game, marking the first ever loss for Team USA in Olympic play, since 1936, is arguably the most controversial in Olympic history."

There was a weird set of arguements that happened in the last few seconds of the match involving a team calling time out but not getting it, and then the outcome in that new set of last 3 seconds being different. Then there were more disputes, and more and more. If you're really curious, you can read up the really long and fully explain explanation down below.

G'day Mike,

Thank you for your question.

The US lost the gold medal in controversial circumstances against the USSR. The Americans had thought that they had won but the clock was restarted with three seconds on the clock. The Soviet team won with one second on the clock. The Americans appealed in vain and never claimed the silver medals. It was the first time that the US had been defeated in Olympic basketball.

See more at an ESPN article on the game.
