What got you using the internet?

All of us that use the internet have different reasons for being online. Some because of work. Others to gain information. Still others hope to find a mate or lost family member. No matter what the reason or the level of experience you have using a computer, just about anything can be done online.

What got you using the internet? Are there any surprises you weren't expecting? What about disappointments?
Tip for best answer: M$0.15
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I guess I really started when I was around 16 years old (5 years ago). I was home-schooled almost my entire life up until that point, so I didn't have many friends. I think I signed up for a Myspace page when I was 16 and I only had a couple of friends on it. I started talking on Yahoo chat with random people about subjects I was interested in. I did this for probably a year or so and got tired of it. I kept in contact with some of the people I chatted with, and have sense lost touch. When I got to college it was all about Facebook. I started getting friends both on and off the Web. The Internet became sort of a secondary thing once I obtained a life.

Yes, there were surprises along the way. Well, I should say... now. I never thought I could actually make money online, and I'm doing it. I started taking part in Mahalo activities in February I think, and now I am totally involved and loving it. I never thought the Internet could play so much of a part in my life, both emotionally and financially. It's a great roller coaster ride for me, and I like where my experience with Internet use is going. I don't think I'll stop anytime soon :)

Awesome question!

I was into BBS games then to compuserve then doom and quake and now to this. Being online since before there was online, I see the younger people use this medium as a means to act badly with the presumption of anonymity. Back in the good old days it was more personal, less secretive and everything was not about advertising and making money.

I guess I'm old and tired. pwned.

I got my first computer at the age of 13. It was a new experience for the whole family, so we explored every feature of the computer. Eventually I learned about the internet, about America Online, chat rooms, instant messaging and websites.

At first, the only thing I was disappointed in about the internet was that I was unable to use the internet when someone else had to use the phone. I wasn't disappointed in much else, because there were few alternatives to what I was presented with.

I started using the internet in the UK in the mid 90s just when it was beginning to become popular. My friend, who had just moved in to my house, had heard about it and signed up to UKonline. His sole intention was to chat to females on the simple chat sites that were available at that time.

I sat and watched him for an hour or two and got so hooked on chat rooms that I went out and got my own internet (dial up) connection; amazingly I actually met my wife in the US on a chat site called Cybersight – so you could say I am very happy that I found the internet.

The first time we got internet was in 1998. I use that to find out documentations related to my studies, as in social science faculty, we had to read lots of references. Now I am using internet, still to read and find information, and also for work and make money online.

I started going online before there was any version of the internet like most people are used to these days. I'm from the days of MUDs and MUSHs, BBS and Newsgroups. WISIWIG! We had one of those modems that you set your phone on in order to get online. It was all text but it was still so fascinating to be able to find lots of stuff to do - games and educational info. My dad has worked with computers for years and that's how we got started at home - he brought out first desktop home from work and hooked it up with the old modem. My brother was really into gaming and such. I was a senior in college when the Web came about - I was taking a computer class for an easy A and remember the teacher being just as awed by the Web as the students. Even then, there wasn't as much to do on it as there is now but still was cool!

Back in the mists of time, shortly after the Iron Age, I was working on a Mac at a company that was full of PC users. They were trying to get their Local Area Network (LAN) happening so they could trade information, but the files kept corrupting. Several consultants later, they sent me home and we tried an experiment. They got me onto the Internet which didn't even have a proper name at the time and sent me PC files. I would then send their PC files from my offsite Mac back to HQ to someone else's PC (across the hall, let's say) which actually worked. I was the network hub for about 3 years before the WWW really started to happen. The year I got on the Internet was actually around 1986. We did not have email. There were no GUIs. Just black space and code. PCs were using DOS. How about that? Historical information regarding the Web!

My first computer was a Mac 512K which I subsequently upgraded to a Super Mac with 1 megabyte of RAM. Now that was hot stuff!! Who would ever need more than that??

Yeah, I know just what you're talking about! I had a TRS-80 and used a Commodore before going to Apples and then IBMs. The old 'net' was nothing like it is not. WYSIWYG!

Did you ever take the data cassette (!) out of the Commador64 and listen to it? Cheap entertainment!

I started with a Commador64 and Atri2600. Moved to that kind of computer you posted here. Dang that makes me feel old. LOL
