If you can get your hands on the shows that the BBC and other UK channels have been airing, you are definitely better off. Doctor Who is currently running on the BBC, and it is has the record of being the longest-running science fiction show on television for a reason. It is a show about a time (and space) traveling alien who is a bit of a madman. He picks up humans, takes them with him and shows them the universe. It's full of adventure, comedy and fantastic sci-fi.
Other great UK options in the science fiction and fantasy realm are Merlin, Being Human, Misfits and Primeval. Life On Mars is over, but if you can download or grab a copy of that, it was easily one of the best science fiction shows ever written (do not bother with the US version--the concept of the show was completely ruined). It is a show about a cop from our time who gets hit by a car and wakes up in the 1970s. He can't tell if he's crazy, gone back in time, or in a coma and trying to wake up.

M$Warehouse 13 is the other show that is great science fiction and it is also comedy bases though the show trots out a number of different gadgets that are used and have to be stopped by special secret service agents Pete & Mika every week. Those two shows are my favorite sci-fi programs at the moment.
