There was music and a place to dance, though I have to admit people were more interested in playing poker, crazy eights, and blackjack.
My friends and I are the Nerd/Geek crowd so individual results may vary on my next tip. Having role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or story telling games like Mad Scientist University is also a great addition to get people together. Family who would not enjoy these games were still having a blast with cards.

Many places have community events which often involves games or sports that are designed to be a non-alcoholic event.
