Miyamoto Shigeru is a living legend, and quite possibly the reason Nintendo is a massive gaming giant, and not a playing card manufacturer as they once were (they were the first company in Japan to produce plastic playing cards).

Mr. Miyamoto was the man who invented several of the most popular video game franchises of all time, those being the "Super Mario", "Legend of Zelda", "Star Fox", "Earthbound", and "Donkey Kong" franchises. He also created "Pikmin" which, though it hasn't been nearly as successful as the previous three juggernauts, nonetheless enjoyed quite a bit of success itself. These would be stellar accomplishments in themselves, but the true shining accomplishment of Miyamoto's career is that he introduced the concept of the plotline into videogames. He was the one who started telling stories with video games, a concept which has become integral to the growth and, indeed, the survival of the video game industry. Not only that, he also created the ability to save a game state. As a writer who plays video games for the beautiful and profound stories they tell (interactive books, I call 'em. :p), I can honestly say Shigeru Miyamoto is the reason I am such a huge video game fan.

Here's a complete listing of all titles that Mr. Miyamoto created, courtesy of http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,36620/ :

One title that is missing from this is list is "Devil World" (1984), the first title he developed for Nintendo (not counting arcade games).

As a huge, huge fan of video-game music, not to mention role-playing games, I find the Legend of Zelda series, with its wonderful musical scores and compelling plotlines to be the most fun. Zelda will always have a huge place in my heart. When I was a child, I used to watch the Legend of Zelda cartoon all the time on the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, and I loved the game because it was the first RPG. The first story-based video game. And I have always loved a good story.

My favorite Zelda game to date (and granted, I haven't been able to play some of the later ones because of my low level of income and the prohibitive cost of technologies such as next-gen consoles) has to be "The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past", which was released for the Super Nintendo (and of course the Super Famicom in the Japanese market, a year earlier) in 1992. The game is beautiful. It's aesthetically pleasing, has a great musical score, and within the epic RPG was a puzzle game par-excellence. Link to the Past forced the gamer to exercise his or her brain in the vital art of problem-solving, by requiring them to make Link use specialized equipment to perform specific tasks (Link needs to get across a gaping chasm, time to break out the grappling hook!). A game that's beautiful to look at, that hooks the player with its storyline, and even gives the brain a much needed workout is a fine, fine game, in my book. I still play it, from time to time, when I can.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has sold to this very day more than 4 million units worldwide. Possibly, the total number is even higher. According to http://webarchive.org, the number surpassed 4 and a half million copies sold as of February, 2005:

"1987 NES Legend of Zelda - 6.510 mil
1988 NES Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - 4.380 mil
1992 SNES The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 4.610 mil
1993 GB The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - 3.830 mil
1998 N64 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 7.600 mil
CGB The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX - 2.220 mil
2000 N64 The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - 3.360 mil
2001 CGB The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - 3.960 mil
CGB The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - 3.960 mil
2002 GBA The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 1.890 mil
2003 GCN The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 3.070 mil
2004 GCN The Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords+ - N/A
2XXX GCN The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker 2 - N/A "

I think the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is the most fun game Shigeru Miyamoto ever came up with (with the Mario series and the Star Fox series coming next) and I highly recommend it.
