What forms of execution are still legal in the USA?

Are there certain states that just use lethal injection? How about hanging and firing squad? Have all states gotten rid of execution by electric chair?

Oddly enough, while there are methods of execution that have fallen out of favor, and there are certainly states with no death penalty at all, there don't seem to be many instances of any specific form of execution having been legally abolished. In fact, I could only find one.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that electrocution was cruel and unusual, and violated the Nebraska constitution. So although the death penalty statute is still in place in Nebraska, and a defendant could be sentenced to death, at this time there's no way to actually execute someone, because there is no alternative method listed in Nebraska law. The Georgia Supreme Court has also ruled electrocution unconstitutional, in 2001, but their death penalty statute also lists lethal injection.

Many states have more than one method of execution listed in their state law. Some states give the choice of method to the inmate, while some simply list alternatives in case the designated method is either unavailable or ruled unconstitutional.

Lethal injection:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho,
Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada,
New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania,
South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee. Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming,
Federal Government (Under the Violent Crime Control Act of 1994, the method used will be that of whatever state the conviction took place in)

Electrocution:

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee,
Virginia

Lethal gas:

Arizona, California, Missouri, Wyoming

Firing squad:

Idaho, Oklahoma, Utah

Hanging:

Delaware, New Hampshire, Washington

Thank you that was very informative...glad to know the state I'm in isn't the only one who still hangs people! I heard rumor that in WA state if you steal someones horse(s) you can be immediately sentenced to hanging...I think that's crazy...hmmm...maybe that will be my next question...Thanks again!

Hanging has long been abolished. My source is that I have followed the US news closely for many years now and have never heard of that happening. Especially in WA state. Hope that helps.

Do you have any sources to back that up? From what I understand hanging is still legal in WA state....Not trying to be rude just curious where you got the information I like double checking sources from time to time to see what additional information is offered. Thanks.
