Mostly, drink less.
Start the evening with some filling starches in your belly, potatoes work well, as does hard breads like french loaf.
Then, alternate one glass of wine with a glass of water. Drinking, getting drunk in particular, dehydrates you, so alternating water and wine will help keep you hydrated, keep your belly fuller so you don't get as drunk, and will also help with the hangover the next morning!

Basically, you're looking to soak up the alcohol and slow its release into the system a bit. Anything hearty will do the trick nicely. If you keep eating throughout the night, and drink lightly the whole way through, you should hopefully be able to maintain yourself at a light buzz. (Still always be sure to sober up completely before you drive).
In addition to these foods, be sure to drink lots and lots of water all night long. In fact, if you can, alternate one glass of water after every glass of wine. It'll slow down your drunkenness, and help you to not have any hangover symptoms later.

However ... there is no scientific proof that theere is any SIGNIFICANT impact. There is some, but not in a way where a pund of wholeweat bread with oatmeal would absorb 10 beers ...

M$First off I'd make sure I had a full belly... preferably something starchy like bread or pasta to keep the alcohol from going immediately into the bloodstream.
Secondly I'd follow the 1 drink per hour rule. It takes an hour to metabolize each ounce of alcohol you drink. So....
Thirdly, in between glasses of alcohol I'd switch over to a "virgin" drink... like a Virgin Pina Colada, Virgin Bloody Mary etc... if you want to keep up the appearance that you're not being a "lightweight" because you need to impress your friends, family, colleagues, etc. Or.. if you don't give a rat's patootie about what anyone else thinks... opt for something like a sparkling seltzer w/lemon or lime or my favorite... Perrier w/cranberry juice and lime. You can substitute any kind of fruit/fruit juice here.
You can also so things like order a wine SPRITZERS instead of a full glass of wine, or a "shandy" ( this is an English Pub favorite and a European favorite too ) which is half beer and half lemonade, ginger beer, or carbonated fruit juice. Both of these will cut down on your alcohol intake.
