Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Ice cream.

It is an Italian specialty ice cream (spumone, and pronounced the same as in English). It is three layers of ice cream, traditionally chocolate, pistachio and cherry. The ice cream is often blended with whipped cream for a particular texture. Often the chocolate layer may include chocolate bits or chopped hazelnut, and the cherry flavor can include candied fruit bits. Sometimes the cherry flavor may be changed to strawberry or raspberry. Spumoni originated in Naples. Some believe that Neapolitan ice cream is a descendant of spumoni.

In the USA there is actually an official spumoni day on August 21.

If you opt to try making some yourself you want to plan ahead and be quick when working with ice cream. Ice cream picks up odors, so be sure your kitchen is free of cooking onions, cleaning agent smells or the like when you are preparing the spumoni. Also, ice cream forms ice crystals when it defrosts and re-hardens so you want to work with it in a chilled bowl, inside another bowl of ice to minimize this problem.

The last link below is a recipe from Cooks.com for spumoni.

So far the ice cream industry has not found a way to mass produce this fabulous dessert so it tends to be very specialized and on the expensive side. Well worth it for ice cream enthusiasts. In the USA it has come to be thought of as a holiday tradition (probably because of its red/green coloring, although the "red" is really pink), but traditionally it is an anytime, any season treat.
