What food do you think is a staple in your location?

Is the favorite food one that is available regionally or nationwide? Your task is to name the staple which others in the country would find unusual. People who live in Pennsylvania and New York often eat a slice of strong cheese with their warm apple pie, as others around the nation eat it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Salmon I would say if I understand the question correctly. While Salmon is expensive most places in Alaska many people feed it to their dogs as it does not cost anything but some time catching it. I would not say salmon is an unusual dish other places but certainly one more widely available and inexpensive here. I of course however do not like seafood, of any kind, making it ironic I live in one of the seafood capitols of the world.

My favorite food is actually cheese and it is not even really made here. There are a few local farmers that make cheese somewhere In bet, but I don't know of any. Someday I would like to learn to make cheese, sounds like fun.

I live in the Pennsylvania Dutch area in southeastern Pennsylvania and one thing people eat together is cottage cheese and apple butter. I know cottage cheese is a nationwide food but don't believe apple butter is. I remember when I was in college, I have a friend from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which is the western part of the state. He never saw anyone eat cottage cheese and apple butter together. Generally people will eat cottage cheese with salt or pepper or fruits. He said in his part of the state, noone would eat apple butter with cottage cheese. So I think that's a very regional thing for my area of the state. For anyone that hasn't tried it, you should. They actually go very well together.

There are lots of staple foods here is Spain. I live in Madrid presently and here the common ones are the paella (saffron rice), cocido madrileño (Madrid's chickpea stew) bread spread with olive oil, Gazpacho (cold bread and tomato soup), cheese and cured ham (known as Jamon con queso and Chorizo (spicy sausage) .

These meals are all native foods but visitors are always surprised to see the Spanish people munching on their hard cheese and cured ham. You would find this Iberico ham or Serrano ham in almost every home in Spain. It is usually cut in thin slices and served with hard cheese that is also cut in slices.

I like ham, but I was surprised to find it in every home I visited.

In our country the Philippines, rice has been the known staple food. It seems that we cannot live without rice. If I'm not wrong, almost all people around the world depend on rice. Silly me but since rice’s prices are constantly rising, I have thought of changing my staple food, lol. In some parts of the Philippines where rice is scarce, they also eat sweet potatoes and cassava. They just boil them and they often eat it with salted fish pries or salted shrimp pries. They are all yummy! In some parts also, they cook their rice in a way that you will not need to have a separate dish anymore and they call it pater – a complete meal. I also have eaten this and it’s one of my favorites. I would order this everytime I could visit a nearby Moslem city.

I live near the Chicagoland area and one of the staple foods here is Pizza. I would imagine that anyone can buy a pizza in just about every region, this pizza here is most famous for its different kinds of crust including deep dish or stuffed.

While I like to eat my pizza with either sausage and/or pepperoni, a lot of people here like to put rather unusual ingredients on their pizza. Some of the unusual ones that come to mind include shrimp, ham, black olives, onions and even pineapples, just to name a few. Being that the Meat Lover’s Pizza from Pizza Hut is one of may favorites, I can live with the ham but the other ingredients are ones that I would stay away from as far as pizza toppings go.
