What food could you not live without?

I found out recently that a friend of mine is severely lactose intolerant. He can't take any of the normal remedies; something common in almost all of them makes him sick. We were going out to eat and it was really hard finding a place he could actually eat anything. I started thinking to myself, no more cheese burgers, pizza, bagels with cream cheese etc. I could never live without any of those.

That being said what the one food you couldn't live without?

Beer.
I think I have answered this before in some other form. It may have been that the three pantry essentials for me were beer, rum, and cheese (the bread should be fresh). But in a pinch it's the beer I wouldn't want to do without.

Aw man - I couldn't live without a nice, juicy, thick steak at least once a week! I would go INSANE!!!
Gotta have a steak on the grill, potatoes and asparagus and an ice cold beer!! That's my perfect dinner. I'm pretty easy to please as it turns out, but man, if they took that away from me.... just stop the world cause I want to get off.

Something sweet. :) Chocolate, cake, ice cream, cupcakes, pastries and more. Though sugar isn't really good for our body, I think it's still hard to fight temptations at times. :) I simple can't resist a cup of ice cream in a sunny day or chocolates on times I feel sad. Chocolates has some chemicals that makes someone happy. The same element that can be found on people who are in love.

So I think I can't live without some sweets around. But of course, these should be take in moderation.

Next to it is cheese! ^^ I love cheese. I can eat sliced cheese alone. I usually do this as a kid back then. ^^

I'm going to second, third? Cheese, however when I think food, I generally think of a dish not an ingredient.

So I had to break this into categories...

Ingredient: Cheese

Food: Lasagna

I can't believe nobody put Bacon! Whats gong on here?
Alone or acting as a sidekick, bacon is something I could not live with out.
Bacon Cheese burgers I could never give up.
I also love a great steak - @irishstephen1974 - If you ever find yourself in CT there is this restaurant that makes a supreme prime rib with oven roasted potatoes and its called Chucks - http://www.chucksdanbury.com/dinner.htm
I could never give up chicken either. I just love roasted/baked chicken and all the things you can do with it. (quesadillas, wraps, salads, wings, etc etc.)

Cheese is also my choice of food that I wouldn't want to have to live without.

(Even though I understand that the question wasn't asked in the literal sense I just can't bring myself to say, "couldn't live without". )

Yes, cheese has a high fat content but I justify it by telling myself it's a good source of calcium.

I love rice, I think I couldn't live without. It is part of our everyday diet. Rice is the staple food found in our 3 main meals of the day. Usually, served plain and accompanied with a dish (mostly savoury).

Rice is nutritious, delicious and has health benefits too. Of course, all food in moderation and eaten with a balanced meal is beneficial to everyone. Sometimes, I don't eat rice for a day or so, but I find it unusual like something missing.

There are a lot of rice dishes. My favorites are Chinese Fried Rice ,Paella (Spanish), Rice Biryani (indian), Machbous and Maklouba (middle eastern). Soup with rice are also delicious.

The reality is that there is probably nothing I can't live without eating through my mouth. My Father-in-Law, as a result of cancer and subsequent surgeries (and complications from them) has had a feeding tube since March of 2008. He has had nothing except ICE CHIPS by mouth since that time. He "eats" 5 cans of Ensure per day through the tube in his belly.

Not knowing that, I'd have answered New York Strip steak! ;-)

This is a great question and I've given it a lot of thought. I considered chocolate and pizza but I can go months without either and survive (okay, weeks...). Then I thought maybe the right answer would be something healthy like a big salad (think Sienfeld) but then I re-read the question and I totally could live without a big salad so I crossed that off the list. There are lots of things that I like to eat but not often and the foods that I eat often - like tomato soup or a salad - are boring and forgettable.

So I decided that there is nothing in any food group that I couldn't live without hence my answer is coffee. A huge black coffee every morning and then another one at work. Sometimes it's a latte from Starbucks and sometimes it's flavored coffee I purchase from the store and grind myself. But coffee is the one food (stretch here) that I could absolutely not live without. Besides being yum! it's also good for giving you energy to stay awake and not get hit by a bus!

Sushi , is a food that someone who is lactose intolerant could eat with out any consequences, however some have been known to contract Giardiasis (parasite) which inhibits some human intestines ability to produce lactase.
That said, since there is no lactose in the sushi or sashimi itself, your friend should be able to digest it with no issues. Chinese and Japanese populations typically lose between 20 and 30 percent of their ability to digest lactose within three to four years of weaning. Some studies have found that most Japanese can consume 200 ml (8 fl oz) of milk without severe symptoms. So in general you should be relatively save with Japanese or Chinese foods.

I love food but the ones that I cannot live without are chocolate, cheese and coffee (I guess those are my three C’s).

I do understand your friends situation a bit because I do have tendencies to be lactose intolerant but in very mild form and once I has some allergic reaction and my doctor told me to lay off cheese, milk plus vegetables and fruit, and that’s when you notice how many foods contain milk! And you have to think twice before you grab that piece of cake or that slice of pizza.

I hope your friend is able to get some pills or something that will help me with the intolerance or he can try eating soy milk or soy based stuff, even though they are not as tasty.

I love food, but to say I couldn't live without a certain food would be wrong. Think of all the starving people in the world, especially third world countries, they would be happy with anything.
We are blessed to even have a choice of what we like and don't like to eat.
That said, my favorite foods are bread and french fries...I can live without them though.

Oh sweet tea for me without a doubt. I just can't live without it. I buy a gallon of sweet tea from McAlister's deli every week and drink at least a glass every day. I tried to make it on my own but I just can't get it sweet enough so I just buy it. It is the one luxury that I allow myself because it makes me happy ;)

Baked salmon with a side of mashed potatoes...yumm!

Salmon has so much protein and omega 3 fatty acids which are important for a healthy diet. You can also flavor your salmon however you want. Some people just bake it plain. I like to add an herb rub (rosemary, thyme and anything that sounds good to you) and fresh lemon juice.

Potatoes are also great. Many people regard them as overly starchy, but there are actually a great deal of nutrients within one little potato. Leave the skin on for extra protein.

Now that's a hearty, tasty meal!

I have not seen the Mahalo Answers Etiquette to be honest, I'm new to Mahalo but from my browsing and reading a lot of answers, it let one to believe that you are asking and answering the questions of people as if he is just right there in front of you.

Jeffhoard point is,correct me if I'm wrong, one word answers can be interpreted wrongly, or unjustly , or impolitely by viewers so to be safe which there is nothing wrong with that, an answerer can state his /her answer discreetly, short but giving thought what/how it 'll be receive by readers. My opinion is when I answer a question, I always keep in mind the reader, how it will be understood, When talking to a person face to face where you can see the facial expression, etc. is different when you're typing away your reply, the person on the other end may have a different interpretation of the answer so a little explanation goes a long way.

The first is certainly water (it can be called food because it is one of the six major nutrients and an integral part of the food) that nobody can live without!

Thereafter comes Carbohydrate (starch, sugar, cellulose). One can go on without proteins and vitamins, but one cannot live without carbohydrates, because it is what provides the body with energy to live and to act.

So, water and carbohydrates are two foods that nobody can live without.

Eat to live!
