There is one quote that has meant so much to me in my life. It is the truest words ever written, in my estimation, and by believing these words and taking them to heart, you can achieve anything.

I first read this on a poster in a head shop in the 70's. I never forgot it, and it is my motto to this day. Sometimes it's hard to live by, but I try.

"It is a delight to discover people who are worthy of respect and admiration and love, but it is vital to believe yourself deserving of these things. For you cannot live in someone else. You cannot find yourself in someone else. You cannot be given a life by someone else. Of all the people you will know in a lifetime, you are the only one you will never leave or lose. To the question of your life, you are the only answer. To the problems of your life, you are the only solution." ~JO COUDERT

Martin Luther King Jr Quote

''I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. "

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/martin_luther_king_jr_2.html

This quote has definitely change by life because it taught me to look at a person's traits not their race. Thai is exactly how I live my life now.

This quote served as my guide in how to live my life and how to make the most of it. It helped me a lot not to lose focus on what is essential in my life so that I will be able to grow not only physically but spiritually too. It also reminded not to lean too much on my own understanding that there is a God who gives me wisdom if I ask for it for He is my creator and He knows what is best for me.

This quote is from the bible, Matthew Luke 4:4

" Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God."

One of my favorites is:

Fall seven times, stand up eight. (Japanese Proverb)

It reminds me that no matter how difficult life becomes, you just need to get back up, dust yourself off and carry on.

They're not exactly famous, I suppose, but from the Harry Potter series, Albus Dumbledore (the headmaster of Hogwarts) has a lot of very wise things to say that really have affected me.

-- "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."
This is from a part in the book where Harry is staring at a mirror that shows him what he truly desires (a family, as he was born an orphan). We learn from Dumbledore that men have wasted away in front of that mirror because they can't get enough of seeing exactly what they want. I have a tendency daydream a lot, and think about "greener grass" when I don't like my current situation. This quote has helped me in many situations to remember that I am in the present, and I will regret not living it.

-- "In fact, being - forgive me - rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger."
During the training period at my current job, I made (and actually - am making) quite a lot of mistakes. But this really got me through all of my insecurities, because I know that I am an intelligent person (perhaps not more intelligent than others, but I'm not an idiot) and it makes me laugh thinking of that quote. It's Dumbledore's way of saying "We all make mistakes, no prob," and I can secretly think to myself that bigger mistakes mean I'm cleverer than my coworkers - ha!

You can read more of his quotes here, though I'm afraid a lot of them depend on having read the books. Some are understandable without having read them, though! Give them a shot: http://www.mugglenet.com/books/quotes/dumbledore.shtml

"I toss upon the waves, but Thou dost steer, Thou who standeth at the helm of all things Thou hast made." --St. Augustine

I have this one framed and on the wall to remind me that when things are going badly and seem out of control, that God will see me through. He never fails me.

Honestly there are few that I have to say I signify with and would consider things I live by. One was one I found in high school.
"Don't frown because you never know who has fallen in love with you smile." I don't know who this is by but the funny thing is that is what my husband says he first noticed about me....
The other one is; "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, and at times hard to handle, but if you can't handle me at my worst then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best." ~ Marilyn Monroe

“Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”
-Joshua J. Marine

I just stumbled upon this quote one day and it has really changed the way I look at things. I felt down that my life wasn't going the way I wanted, but after reading the quote, I felt more motivated to overcome the challenges in my life.

"It's better to be alone than to be miserable"
I am not too sure how famous it is, but it has defiantly meant a lot to me. It's also a quote that you can not fully appreciate until you've been there and done that.

"It will all come out in the wash"
This one is very dear to me, because when I would confess my problems to my Grandmother, she would say this to me. Guess what? She was right. Grandma knows best!

"Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast The First Stone"
Teaching me that no none is perfect and we should never judge anyone. It's not our place to judge others mistakes, and not theirs to judge ours. It also makes me think about other people's situation, placing my feet in their shoes.

"Prejudiced is Ignorance" - self explanatory

"Ignorance is bliss"- Sometimes I'd rather not know and sometimes I am my own worst enemy by having to have the knowledge behind things that I'd be better off not knowing.

One that I have lived by is, "It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, than it is to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
- Mark Twain. This one has kept me out of some potentially sticky situations.

Some others that I like and try to apply are,

"If everyone took an eye for an eye, the whole world would be blind." -Mahatma Ghandi

"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." -King Solomon, Proverbs 11:14

"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." -President Theodore Roosevelt

"When you come to a fork in the road ... Take it."
- Yogi Berra

These are some of my favorites, I hope you enjoy them.

I'm glad you said quoteS plural because I don't think any one snippet can really encompass everything, instead I try to derive a functional and productive outlook from the philosophy expressed in several quotes from various people, each speaking on a different aspect of life. Here's a few of the most important:

"I think we all have moral obligations to obey just laws. On the other hand, I think that we have moral obligations to disobey unjust laws because non-cooperation with evil is just as much a moral obligation as cooperation with good." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

"If there's something wrong, those who have the ability to take action have the responsibility to take action." -Unknown

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt, (Republican President, 1901-1909)

"Imagination is more important than knowledge." -Albert Einstein

"Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted." -Martin Luther King, Jr.

These, along with the videos below, and the fundamentals of my religion (Pikuach Nefesh) and my experiences in life form the foundation of my worldview. I try to remind myself not to repeat the mistakes of the past, and those which led to my own suffering in turn. To that extent I try always to remember that there is no such thing as an inappropriate time or means to speak out against a wrongdoing or in defense of the innocent. "I was only following orders" and "Rules are rules" have led to some of the most horrific slaughters and suffering in human history. Furthermore I think that at this point it is abundantly clear that passive inaction is an active assistance for evil to flourish while in order for good to merely exist people must actively obstruct of evil.

And in the midst of all of thus we need most of all to avoid falling prey to what President Washington warned of over 200 years ago, the natural tendency to form into partisan groups and attack each other simply for being a part of the other arbitrary division. As was recently bemoaned at the seattle times when this occurs it is no longer facts which matter, and there is no more respect for our peers and their right to have their own views. There is no more compromise, or indeed even humanity. The entirety of our worldview becomes an all-consuming need to destroy, demean, and obstruct an "Enemy" which we arbitrarily define as anybody who doesn't agree with us strongly enough.

Only by keeping all things in balance, by remembering to respect dissent and maintain of all things Faith in an objective reality and it's facts, by standing bravely against wrongdoings even when everyone else demands we maintain silence, and by valuing life, facts, and rational if "creatively maladjusted" thought do we have a hope for a better tomorrow.
