What factors made Harry Potter so successful?
What has made the Harry Potter movies so wildly successful? Is it the actors, the producers, the fantastic special effects?

hi jonsigler!
From my personal point of view, I would say that the movies are successful thanks largely to the books. According to Wikipedia's list of best selling books, the 7 (+3 companion books) Harry Potter books netted over 400-million copies. That would be roughly about 40 million owner per-book. With the captivating storyline and - yes - fantastic special effects, the movies were granted success even before they were made, I'd say.
The young main actors – while from a critical point of view, aren't overly brilliant – made the characters identifiable largely because the actors literally grew up along with the characters. And thus give the viewers – most of whom grow up with the book – a realistic sense of progression with the storyline. The older actors were brilliantly picked, though, in spite of the unfortunate change for a very important cast (Richard Harris who played Dumbledore died and was replaced by Michael Gambon for the role).
