The main population growth limiters are:

1. Availability of food and water
2. Loss of population due to predation
3. Loss of population due to disease and parasites, especially newly introduced diseases and parasites

Other population growth disruptions can come in the form of:

1. Disruption of migration paths
2. Disruption of breeding, nesting or denning habits by habitat loss
3. Temperature fluctuations outside of norms

Nature has managed wildlife populations long before man got involved. While you may not consider nature's methods to be kind, they are effective.

Natural control of wildlife population generally happens through an increase in disease or a shortage of resources (such as food or water). There also seems to be a component of social regulation (dominant species or individuals within a species) for the purpose of preventing overpopulation and consequent destruction of resources.

Absolutely. Predators were implied in my mention of social regulation (dominant species), but it is important enough to be discussed explicitly.
