Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's my understanding that Swimmer's Ear can happen to anyone. However, it's more likely to happen to people who are in the water a great deal. The ear has a natural level of ear wax that helps protect the ear from bacteria and infections. Once that is upset, the ear is more likely to get an infection.

People who clean their ears frequently, swim or submerge their ears often in bath water upset that wax or soften the thin skin of the ear canal.

According to the MayoClinic
-quote-
Swimmer's ear is an infection of the ear canal. In most cases, bacteria cause this infection in the thin layer of skin lining the canal.

Swimmer's ear is normally not serious if treated and protected against early on. Usually someone experiencing this condition will have these symptoms:
*Itchy ears
*Drainage that is free of odor
*Some discomfort
*Skin in the ear canal that appears to be red

More serious problems usually have these symptoms:
*Pus coming from the ear
*Pressure
*Disturbed hearing
*The feeling of a stuffed up ear

Very serious symptoms include:

*A great deal of pain
*Skin that crust
*Skin that is red outside of the ear
*Swollen lymph nodes

It is recommended to see a doctor at the first sign, because the condition can progress into a serious nature.

Ostitis externa, also known as swimmer's ear, is an infection of the ear canal. It is known as swimmer's ear because it commonly occurs when excessive amounts of water enters the ear canal. It causes the canal to get red and swollen. It can also occur when other substances, such as dirt or sand enter the canal. Swimmer's ear occurs when the protective layer in the canal is removed due to those irritants mentioned above.

You will be more suspectible to swimmer's ear if you have a narrow ear canal, have excessive amounts of ear wax or if you live in a warm and humid climate.
Symtpoms of swimmer's ear include feeling of fullness or pain in the ear, hearing loss or drainage from the ear. The pain associated with swimmer's ear increases when chewing.
