A lot of the traffic to any website comes via search engines like Google.
In order to actually get that traffic to your site, by and large your site has to appear in the first page or two of the search engine results. Those are all the ones that most people click on, and in fact most people will just look at the first few results.
Therefore it can be vital to a website's success whether it appears in the first ten results on Google or back on page three.
So SEO is all about trying to ensure that when people enter a particular search term, your site ranks highly in the results.
2) How do search engines work?
To a large extent, SEO is only necessary and possible to the degree that search engines suck. If Google always found the best sites on any subject (kinda what Mahalo tries to do with its human-powered search) then you wouldn't have to worry about anything but making a great site.
However, Google at al can only make an approximation at guessing whether a site is great, and even at figuring out what it is even about.
They keep quiet about exactly how they make their guesses, but some of the factors are things like how many other sites link in to that site. The theory being if a lot of people have linked to the site, it's probably a useful one.
3) How does SEO work?
SEO tries to use what is known (or guessed) about how search engines work to get sites to rank higher. For example, if the number of links pointing to a site is thought to be important, SEO practioners work on "link building". If it's thought that search engines pay a lot of attention to heading text, then SEO practioners worry about getting the wording of the heading just right.
In fact there's a huge number of different ideas about what might or might not be important. Experienced SEO practioners vary in what they think is most important, or even on what works at all.
Remember, no outsider knows exactly how Google decides to rank sites. And what's more they are constantly developing their techniques, so something that was important last year might be irrelevant now.
4) White hat, Black hat
Theoretically there are "good guy" or "white hat" SEO practioners who use methods that Google and co approve of, and aim to help search engines reach valid conclusions about what a site is, and how useful it is.
Then there are the "black hats" who use methods like creating spam blogs to link to sites to make them seem more important than they really are.
Actually, my impression is there are quite a lot of people who are "black hat", lots more that are in a "gray" area, and probably only a few that are pure white.

M$1)
Search engines regularly look for (spider) new and updated pages online.
*Basic* SEO creates pages that are easy for a search engine to view, categorize and summarize.
2)
After the search engine has categorized and summarized the page, it is placed in the search engine archive (index) along with pages that are similar.
*Good* SEO helps pages come up sooner or more often when someone searches for a specific term (keyword).
3)
There are various methods, tricks and techniques to do these things better and faster than anyone else.
*Great* SEO starts with clearly designed, standards compliant, interesting pages. With enough time, a page that is designed with these things in mind will do very well in the SEO "game". To reach the first page of many google results one must extend these 3 things and consider linking, keyword targeting and a number of other things.
SEO is all of these things. From basic to good to great, SEO is made up of these layers.
I hope that this helps!
I know a thing or two about the web. Literally, two things... that's it :)

M$SEO Search Engine Optimization is a process of trying to get your website or blog or other URL Internet address into search engines.
The point of doing this is so people can find your information.
Some people only read the first 2, 3, 4 or 5 (approximately) pages when doing a search.
Thus, many people want to appear on the top few pages.
It is such a big business, that people who get desperate will pay companies to help get them noticed.

M$SEO also takes into account the number of links to your pages from other sites. The reputation of those sites linking to you also plays a role. Better to be a book publisher with links from amazon.com than links from some site known for spamming lots of links to help improve someones ranking.
The first book I ever read on SEO was Getting Noticed on Google in Easy Steps.

M$If you design a great site which is updated frequently and visited often and linked to by many sites, people will be able to find you in the major search engines. All the tricks you thought of as you read this paragraph (link farming, reciprocal linking, updating by including feeds on your page) are already tried and countered.

M$Along with content of the website, meta tags, page description and link building also have equal importance. For a content based website like the one you've, I read, article submission of third party websites can be a potent tool to get good search results on Google, Yahoo or any other search engine. I've read on many tools available for SEO and I'd suggest that you can at least start with article submission services.
