A sonnet is a form of poetry with some very specific rules. There are basically three types of sonnets in Englsih: Italian (Petrarchan), Spenserian, and Shakesperean, named after the three writers who did most to develop the forms. Each form follows certain rules, mostly concerning the ryhming scheme, meter, and the subdivision of the 14 lines of iambic pentameter that make up all sonnets.
Here are some rules for a Shakesperian sonnet, the simplest form:
1. All sonnets must be 14 lines long.
2. Each line is written in iambic pentameter. This simply means that each line has ten syllables, broken into five groups of two, with a natural spoken emphasis on the second syllable of each group (sing-song recitation should be avoided).
3.The rhyme scheme is this: ababcdcdefefgg. In other words, the end of line one (represented by "a") rhymes with line three, the end of line two (represente by "b")
rhymes with the end of line four, and so on.
An Italian sonnet has a different rhyming scheme and it's 14 lines are didvided into an eight line octave and a six line sestet. Line nine, the filrst line of the Sestet, is called the "Volta" and represents a turn in the subject matter of the poem, perhaps a solution to a problem or a whole new perspective.
A Speserian form has yet anothrer rhyming scheme, ending in a rhymed couplet that serves as the volta, or turning point. The last two lines often give a solution or conclusion. A Spenserian Sonnet is basically a 12 line verse followed by a two line verse.
Sonnets are quite often about love, and have a reputation for being melodramatic and overdone. They are, however, an excellent way to bring discipline to poetry, and at the same time bring the challenge to condense the best of his skills to bear in a few short lines. There is an abundance of execllent lines and couplets to be discovered in the reading of sonnets.
Consider this opening line by John Keats:
"When I have fears that I may cease to be"
