What exactly is a root canal and what is the procedure like?

My dentist told me I may have to have one done...I'm nervous I heard they are extremely painful...So what exactly gets done? Does it really hurt that bad?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A root canal is a removal of the tooth's pulp due to its death, impairment or infection. This dental procedure is another alternative to tooth removal, it is found to safe and helpful, and it is generally similar to just having a filling.

I myself have also undergone root canal, it just went smoothly, and still have my tooth.

I have undergone root canal and the pain is very minimal to no pain at all. I was surprised though because I thought that root canal is painful but my dentist reassured me that it is not so I took her word for it and I'm glad I did.

The tooth's pulp is located in the center of the tooth and in canals called root canals within each tooth root. The pulp consist of connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels which nourishes the tooth when it first erupts.
If the tooth matures, the pulp can be safely removed and the root canals and tooth can be maintained.
Removing the pulp is called "root canal" or endodontric treatment. Most of the cases in root canal procedure will experience no pain because the dentist is going to numb the tooth surrounding the area. There are also numbing gels and modern injection system are are available and virtually painless. You can let your dentist know immediately if there is still pain so that he or she can modify the technique to avoid repeating the pain.
