What equipment will I need to go Alligator shooting?

By shooting, I mean using a camera to take pictures.

I would like to take some early evening canoe trips with my hubby to check out the wildlife and see how many alligators live in my neighborhood. My backyard is Dog River, Alabama. I see them more often further North at the top of Mobile Bay in the Delta area, but I haven't seen an alligator in Dog River.

What should I take? I'd like to have some good hands free light. What else do I need?
I have a two person canoe and some good cameras... what else?

How good are you at canoing? I ask because although I have sometimes canoed and far more frequently photograph, I would not trust my digital SLR camera to a canoe. Digital camera's are notoriously alergic to damp, let alone water. If it were me, I'd use the waterproof digital camera with zoom that I use when snorkling. Not that I would snorkle in a river full of alligators. Did you notice that three 13 footers were recently caught in Georgia and Florida, setting some records? Since the gators made their comeback after overhunting, they are getting bigger and bigger.

I was also looking into some good light sources. Besides having a good light on my head (since my arms will be busy paddling) should I also have a light source on the boat?

What do you think of this head flashlight? Would LED be better than a regular light?

You'll have to report back on this! I don't think you'll find an experienced night, alligator photographer to ask.
LED's are better, but how about this one? It takes 3 batteries vs 2 and seems to have more LED's:

here's a clamp on boat light for kayaks etc

Photographing any wildlife requires a telephoto lens of at least 200MM in focal length. A 300mm lens is preferred since it will allow you to be farther away from the alligator. If you are using digital single lens reflex camera or a filmcamera you will not be able to silence the camera shutter and the telephoto lens will allow you to be farther away from the gator so you will not startle the animal with the shutter noise. It is also best to be downwind from the animal so your scent will not cause the gator to run away. If using a digital camera set the camera to fire in multiple exposures since you may startle the gator. When you start to shoot hold down the shutter button to take a series of images. Set your camera for a fast shutter seed to freeze the movement of the animal.

Thanks for all the great information regarding wildlife photography. I wish I could get my hands on a telephoto lens! I do have a decent digital and will be setting it on multiple exposures to see.

Well... if I don't see any Gators in Dog River, I'll just have to take my canoe up to the Tensaw Delta. Tip coming your way!

I wish you would have taken the time to read the question. I was referring to shooting with a camera.

Even if did want to go out and kill them, there is a short hunting season in the State of Alabama, and my name would have to be drawn from a hat.
