What does wifi stand for?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Wifi is a play on the older term Hi-Fi, which stood for High Quality (fidelity) audio. It is mere marketing jargon that caught on, although some argue that it has watered down the meaning. Here is an interesting link from Boing Boing on the subject.

Wireless Fidelity is a backronym... I.e. it was derived after Wi-Fi was created, not before. The name was meant to invoke Hi-Fi. The phrase wireless fidelity is meaningless.

“Wi-Fi doesn’t stand for anything.

It is not an acronym. There is no meaning.

Wi-Fi and the ying yang style logo were invented by Interbrand. founding members of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance, now called the Wi-Fi Alliance hired Interbrand to come up with the name and logo that they could use for their interoperability seal and marketing efforts. They needed something that was a little catchier than “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence”

it stands for wireless fidelity

Wi-Fi (pronounced /ˈwaɪfaɪ/) is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance for certified products based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. This certification warrants interoperability between different wireless devices.

In some countries (and in this article) the term Wi-Fi12 is often used by the public as a synonym for IEEE 802.11-wireless LAN (WLAN).

Not every IEEE 802.11 compliant device is certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, which may be because of certification costs that must be paid for each certified device type. The lack of the Wi-Fi logo does not imply that a WLAN-device is incompatible to certified Wi-Fi-devices.
