What does TIFF refer to?

Why is TIFF preferred by some? How is it different from RAW, JPEG and other file types? Do TIFF files take up more space than the other files?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

TIFF files are often preferred because of the reduced processing time, the computer can typically open a TIFF file 8-10 times faster than pdf's. TIFF files have a locked color code, making the printing process more reliable than other file types. You always run the risk of computers processing colors slightly differently, but the standard for TIFF is permanent. In general, the file sizes are usually smaller making many images very portable. JPEGS tend to be the only files smaller than TIFF but you lose more data about the image in the JPEG format and you also lose the color consistency.

RAW files are by far the largest and contain all the image information for every single pixel. When you use this format it is the largest file size and has not been processed at all. This gives your full control in processing the image. This is the file type that photographers use but photographers often delete many photos and only keep their favorites. This being said, if you are logging 100's of photos of your life, you likely won't have the memory capacity to save it all.
