What does the term Lo-fi mean when referring to music or bands?

I know that Lo-fi means low fidelity, but what does that actually mean when it comes to bands that are labeled "Lo-fi"?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When used in reference to bands, it generally means that when they record their music, they intentionally do it so that the final product isn't really finished; it still sounds rough and unpolished.

The majority of the music you hear has been tweaked and modified using studio equipment, but generally these lo-fi bands pride themselves on using the raw recordings.

Here's a forum thread in which members listed some of their favorite Lo-fi bands and albums:

Sometimes it also refers to using lo fidelity gear and samples to produce very intricate and/or "finished" musical works. Think of bands who use the old Commodore 64 SID sound engine to produce music, or those who might employ an old 4 track cassette recorder to capture their masterpiece.
There's a lot of old digital gear out there that is available quite cheap and can provide a lofi feel to music: The Ensoniq Mirage sampler is a great way to achieve a lofi sound, as would be an old Korg DDM110 or Casio SK-1.
