What does the symbol of the "left" hand or "glove" mean in literature...eg Margaret Atwood has used it in her novels

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It symbolizes deception or a reversal of true intent, or something sinister; traditionally in Europe, the left hand is viewed as the "sinister" hand, and some languages even use "sinistro" to mean the left.

There is an example of presentation of a left-hand glove to the Duke of Prussia by the city of Konigsberg; it was a symbol of submission to his rule.
