What does saturation do in Photoshop?

Does it help make a picture look better?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Saturation makes colors richer or less rich. If you set the saturation down all the way to zero, then the picture will be completely gray. If you set it all the way up, it will make all of the colors as rich as possible (perhaps too rich).

Used well, it can be very helpful. Too much saturation can look unnatural or glaring. Too little saturation can look washed out or dull. You pick the level of saturation that looks best to your eye.

Hi, @horton!

Yes, used with skill the "saturation" function in Photoshop can make a picture look better. This function is often used to enhance scans from low quality scanners or images if the colors look in any way "unreal".

You can use the "saturation" function to selectively fade or augment the colors.

This function is also often used in combination with other filters or image enhancement tools like "sharpen", for example.

I have found this very useful website which is a "Adobe Photoshop User Guide for Beginners":
http://www.hku.hk/cc/document/photoshop/

Everything to do with the functions in Photoshop is very well defined and explained there.

I like to use Photoshop myself for high quality image processing and conversions. Once one has learnt to manage this software, it is really ideal for almost all image applications.

Hope, this helps!
