Mixed-mode on wireless router means that the router is able to simultaneously run clients that use different protocols on the wireless cards (e.g. one laptop uses 802.11b wireless card and the other uses 802.11g wireless card).
There is a report that in mixed mode router, the slower client can actually (802.11b) caused the faster one (802.11g) to become slow.
