What does listening to music make you feel?

I listen to a varied amount of music but only listen to it to relax as it makes me feel calm. Each genre has a way of making me feel something different. Generally though, I'm either getting pumped and/or exited from it, or it's just for relaxation sake. When it comes to it though, I love anything that can make you feel something, regardless of what the emotion is.

I was wondering how do you guys feel when you listen to music?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I'd agree that what I'm listening to general changes what I am feeling. However all music makes me happy. It always does... like an auditory hug. I can think of very few songs that make me sad...more so if I sing along lol

For instance...
Seven Mary Three- Waters Edge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an0VNmQrO0k&feature=related

Not even sure why, but that song has always made me sad.

The Verve Pipe- The Freshman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hxe85iErew

A Perfect Circle- The Noose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB3Gv4oZdWo

That one really does it.

Wow smart of me, listen to the three songs I know that make me unhappy in a row. I suppose it's because I grew up in a little house with a huge family, the only real way to be alone was to go outside and freeze (I live in Alaska) or put on headphones and drift away. Music is tide rather firmly to my emotions.

I think music is very emotional. When I am down and out music can bring a smile to my face and lift my spirits. Music can also be very calming. I work from home and tend to listen to music most of the day, it keeps me motivated. When I need to clean house, I typically bring out the faster music to pump me up and light a fire under my tush. Even if I do not feel like cleaning, once I turn the music on cleaning gets done quicker and it does not seem so daunting. If I am really dragging butt, I will turn the music up very loud and get the job done. I love music of all kinds. I love listening to music, as well as singing. (Although I am not very good at singing, I see sing loud and proud- which usually leads to the rest of the family getting a headache.)

Well I listen to music all of the time! Depending on what exactly it is that I am listening to will play a huge part in the mood I have and how I begin to feel. For instance, when I try to get in to the mood to begin cleaning or doing a task that will take a little bit longer than your average thing to do, I will listen to things like techno and it will give me a nice boost and keep me energized enough to keep up the work! Now when I listen to slower songs I feel just relaxed or depending on the lyrics can also begin to feel sad. Music has a huge influence in the emotions people can and will experience, that is why I try to keep myself in the middle of positive and uplifting music!

Great question. I listen to music for a variety of reasons. I play in recreational basketball leagues a couple of times a week. En route to the games, I normally listen to rap music because it puts me in a more aggressive mood. In sports, you can not survive with a passive mentality so listening to rap before games helps put me in an non-passive mood beforehand.

When I am just driving in general, I tend to listen to more laid back music (slow/love songs etc) because it helps me to escape from the demands of my day job and puts me in a more relaxed mood. Listening to a good slow song can often help turn a bad day into a good one instantly.

The same thing with chores. No one likes cleaning house, mowing the grass etc. However, listening to music while does make the task(s) seem more manageable.

I think good music should make you feel anything, but nothing particular. All sorts of different artists and songs make me feel all sorts of different ways. It's hard to write a song and have it convey an emotion. Most "sad" songs had no intention of being sad by the songwriter, same with angry, happy, or exciting songs. Seeing as how its almost impossible to sit down and write emotion into a song, any song with emotion is most likely a good one.

If music doesn't bring up a feeling in you, its not worth listening to.

I have always compared music to act as a drug or mood stabilizer for myself. It can also be depressing as well.

When I listen to music with an upbeat, I get very happy. This type of music makes me feel like I am on top of the world. Nothing can stop me and life is perfect.

When I listen to Techno music. I get an edgy burst of energy that can actually be some of the nervous energy.

When I listen to something I consider sad, I get actually a bit depressed. It can be short lived, but sometimes it just kills my mood. Then again, sometimes I need a good cry and this can help me with that. Sometimes I get this alert depress feel, for lack of a better description. This feeling comes from songs such as:
Lacuna Coil - Within Me
Coldplay - Yellow
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

When I listen to old time Gospel music, it makes me feel guilty sometimes. Then sometimes it helps me feel closer to God.

I usually connect music with something I know. Whether it's an emotion, something that happened in my past, or a movie that brought out a similar feeling in me, I always connect to music in some way. I think that music somehow defines who we are. Why do we listen to it? Why do we write it? To express something about ourselves that we cannot explain in words. To feel something that is absent from our souls without the presence of music. I feel like music does something for us that no other outside source can. It can help us be who we are or, at least, who we want to be.

Lyrics can be great in terms of describing what the songwriter things the music is about. And it can help us identify with the piece more. But I find myself connecting to the purest forms of music. The other night I watched Shutter Island again and after, I took my computer into my room and played ''On The Nature Of Daylight'' from the soundtrack and just wept.

Another song that I love is Pieces by Red. Now, I definitely connect to the words here and feel deep sadness, but it's really the intro (without lyrics) that changes me from the inside.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3U6BCUQqG8

Nothing about these two songs are masterful. They aren't complex or composed with a touch of genius. They are simple songs with a hint of melody and a lot of darkness. I guess in trying to answer your question, I have realized my dilemma. I feel many things when I listen to different types of music. But I guess the dark, lonely, helpless feeling is what I love to feel. It's my choice when listening to music. Feeling despair makes me feel alive, and music can do that to me better than anything else can.

Thanks for the inspiring question!
