M$As a Hmong person, even 15 years ago (Holy Cow I'm getting old, I'm using double digits in telling my history, yeesh), I still experienced a bit of racism, though it wasn't full blown. I went to a basically all white elementary school, and remember only having 2 friends the entire time I was there. Yea it didn't help that I didn't know how to act around people, I didn't have a good role model, but the kids avoided me as if I was the plague. That made for a sad, lonely childhood.
Nowadays, most places I go, I am regarded as just another person. Suits me just fine. :)
I also believe that dedicating one month to it is great, and that we continually have a reminder of what happened many years ago, so it doesn’t happen again. On the other hand I also believe that we should not make it just a day or month thing. Most of us (like me, who understand some of the implications of racism), don’t have to be reminded every day. I appreciate it fully, certainly not everyday, but every time I see an ethnic person.
I cringe every time, even though its not ‘black history month’ one of my co-workers say “Speak English, you’re America.”. I want to whip right around and say, did the Native American’s say “Speak Native America, you’re in our country” to your ancestors before your ancestors killed them? Gah! It infuriates me.
So again I say, we should remember such things everyday. Every time someone who doesn’t speak your language, or had a different skin tone, or has a different culture crosses your path remember that you don’t have to accept them but please respect them.
