What does "Are we human? Or are we dancers?" mean?

The new song by The Killers playing non-stop is intriguing, but I don't
understand what this line actually means. Is it just jabberwocky? or is
there something behind it?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The inspiration for the lyrics was from a Hunter S. Thompson quote - ‘We’re raising a generation of dancers’.

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers came out in an MTV interview to confirm his lyrics, which is in fact “are you human, or are you dancer?”. He wasn’t too happy when some people thought it was “denser” instead. He was quoted as saying “They think it’s nonsense. But I was aching over those lyrics for a very long time to get them right.“

He acknowledged that the lyrics aren’t grammatically correct, but he also commented that he is also allowed to do what he wants.

I think by posing the question "Human or Dancer" suggests that as humans we have free will, but as dancers we are guided by the music. You could almost even interpret dancer as "puppeteer," someone being lead about by strings.

The thing about the lyric writer trying to dictate the meaning is funny, because lyrics, like poetry, are going to be interpreted by everyone who hears them and nothing the lyricist says about his intended meaning will ever make a difference.

Similar to, "What if the hokey pokey IS what it's all about?"

According to everything I've read, there is no meaning to this song at all -- it is ALL jabberwocky-type nonsense. But I don't recall the source, so this is a guess more than a definitive answer.

Brandon Flowers has said that they are not nonsense and do hold meaning.

If you think on it, what does it mean to be human? if you just go through the motions does that still make you human? Those are the themes that the lyrics try to tackle or at least make you think about.

It sounds almost like a kind of battle cry or pep talk a lead dancer might give his team. "Are we human? Or are we dancers?" could be seen as a challenge by the team leader to his team to perform their very best.

I think jeff's answer speaks to the true origin of this, but I think this is one possible interpretation aside from that.
