Day to day, they oversee peace talks, handle issues of peace-making, trade, war, economics and culture. International treaties are usually negotiated by diplomats prior to endorsement by national politicians.
Diplomats are also closely linked to espionage or gathering of intelligence.
Specifically, Holbrooke will coordinate an effort across the government, including Defense Department, to achieve US goals in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
