Hello @fullow! A Paelobotanist is a person who study fossil plants that are found buried in sediments and rocks. Paleobotany is one of the several fields of study within the broad science of botany.
It is natural for plants to break apart into pieces while they are still alive. Just like pollen that is often released in Spring and leaves that fall in Autumn. It is quite normal to find a leaf here and a branch over there and seeds everywhere. When a plant wither and dies, it breaks into smaller pieces. We can rarely find a leaf that is attached to a branch that show that they belong to the same plant. The paleobotanist on the other hand usually gives a different name to each part of a plant until they will be able to determine that it is a part of the same plant.
Plant fossils are preserved part of a plant that has long died. These fossil may exist pre-historically and are many million years old. Prehistoric plants are plants that lived before recorded history which is before 3500 BC.
