What do you think of this idea?

If when you ask a question before it gets posted you are given a list of other questions that may be the same as yours. I they aren't or if they are to old and not answered then you post yours.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think it would definitely teach people how to navigate Mahalo a lot better. But also it would mean less questions and for the newbies I think they would be missing out.

If the answerer doesn't mind, or there are answerers who have new points of view, then no problem. Else they may give you a link (which they may be kind enough to do, for you) to the duplicate answer.

That would imply that you don't search for an answer before asking. That is getting more common. People will just throw a question out there without taking 30 seconds to see if it's already been asked.

The proper method for searching for answers...is to search for them first. If you don't find anything, then ask.

Maybe I'm old fashioned. :) I wouldn't walk into a library and ask somebody to find a book for me. I'd look for it first, or at least ask someone to explain the organization method and get a map.

I know what you mean and most of the time I do a search first but I have asked a question and then thought after if it may have already been asked.

In general, I like the idea. It may help the questioner refine how they ask if the question has already been asked or the answers the previous, similar question got were much different than expected.
My only concern is for email/cell phone questioners. In that case, I would like to see the step eliminated. The point of that sort of question is speed and brevity, and the process would be extended if this went into effect across the board.

Good point the email i questions should be exempt. And if it is an email in one and it has been asked before then I'm sure people can forgive it.
