What do you think of the Google Goats? Google got a herd of goats to keep the grass cut at their campus.

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think GOOGLE got the idea from Merrick!

The Town of Hempstead has a new set of grass cutters for the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, and they go by the names Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, Happy and Doc.

"We'll let them eat to their hearts' content," said Town Supervisor Kate Murray. "Basically, they're going to be our natural lawn mowers."

The preserve hopes the goats will thrive -- and perhaps add to their ranks.
"We figure with one boy and four girls, nature might take its course," Murray said.

I think it's a great idea. It's "green" plus it's fabulous public relations.

It would seem to be both of those.

It's a novel idea but they may find that the costs to care for the goats meets or exceeds the costs of mowing.

Well I believe from the article they are not actually keeping the goats themselves a local herder is trucking them in for a few days a month.

I have long thought of doing something like this myself, but keeping a few goats could wind up being a lot of trouble. I'm still looking into dwarf goats.

However, goats are far from environmentally sound overall. Society has to be very careful with goats. A few goats is fine, and using them to clear some scrubland that needs clearing as Google is doing is great. But goats won't stop there if they are not strictly controlled. They will destroy all vegetation, they eat plants right down to the stubble. Then the land erodes and becomes barren. I have long believed that overuse and overpopulation of goats destroyed both the fertility and natural landscape of ancient Greece and the surrounding Mediterranean lands.

I don't remember the sources for the research I did on this about the Mediterranean way back in college;but, as far as current goat problems go they are still well known. In particular goats should never be brought to an island. Here's just one quick source:http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?search=Capra+hircus

Ah so the notion that a goat will eat anything is only half the story. The other half is they will eat everything they can.

I think it's a great way to 'go green'. There are many farmers and ranchers that own a lot of acreage and have cattle just to keep the grass trimmed down. Google has always shown itself to be a smart company and this is just another instance of their ingenuity.

We have a herd of goats (have you heard of goats?) that mow an area around our local reservoir. What a great use of a natural resource...

Do they do anything with the goats or do they just let them mow the grass?

Don't believe everything you read. The goats are actually there in case Yahoo sends the ninjas over again. The lawn is just a cover up.
