What do you think of Apple's criticism of other smartphones?

After last week’s iPhone 4 press conference, Apple posted one new Smartphone antenna performance page . On that page the company highlighted how some of the other smartphones, such as Nokia N97 mini and Motorola's Droid X, showed the same decrease in signal strength, just as users experienced with the iPhone 4. Do you think this comparison is really called for? What would Apple inc. gain from this criticism?

Apple's criticism of other smart phones such as the Nokia N97 mini and Motorola's Droid X, I think shows, that the company is trying to deflect attention from their antenna signal problems. But by dragging other mobile companies into the picture only shows lack of impropriety on Apple's part and demonstrates that the company will not address the truly hardware issue.

Nokia and Motorola's products have already passed the scrutiny of Consumer Reports, unlike the iPhone 4, which has been tagged with a "not recommended" by the firm. Apple's Steve Jobs have completely missing the picture, due to the fact that instead of issuing a product recall, he offered a band aid solution that is a free bumper case for each iPhone 4.

If they will not address the hardware issue, it would be better for Apple to introduce iPhone 5 than dragged other mobile companies.

In the beginning, the iPhone was a revolutionary product and put Apple miles ahead of the competition. But eventually the other companies caught up, and Apple is no longer the innovatory of the smart phone. There are many different cell phones out there, some that do things better than Apple.

It seems Apple does not know how to handle the pressure of competition, and have to resort to underhanded tactics such as accusing other companies of bad reception. It is almost like Apple is running a political campaign and have to say bad things about the other candidates.

Apple should fix their own problems (bad reception, battery power) before trying to put down other companies. And Steve Jobs has to learn to think before he speaks.

I think there is really two ways to look at this - on one hand, Apple has every right to compare their phone to other products on the market to show that other phones are suffering the same issue that the iPhone 4 is dealing with. On that front, it is a moderately effective tool to minimize the perception of this issue in their phone. Look, if other phones have this problem, maybe Apple’s product isn’t that bad.

Here’s the thing (and my other point) - Apple isn’t touting the iPhone as “just another smartphone”, so trying to say that this is a common issue actually works AGAINST them. Apple’s image is based on making products that are perceived as the best and very well designed. To keep that image, Apple would be better off keeping the competition out of the mix. The leader only competes against itself, so they should have focused the press conference on how this is not acceptable for Apple since Apple expects more than other phones.

Steve - you should be pointing the finger at yourself!

I think for the most part, Apple’s ripping on their competition is nothing more than businesses continuing the corporate fight and not much more. The fact that they rip on their competition is nothing new though it does seem a little petty and mean. I don’t think that everyone at the company actually believes that Apple always has the best products, some of their managers and employees understand that some companies actually can make the better product or at the better component. They of course can’t admit this to the general public and instead need to talk as though everyone else is completely inferior. I think this tactic can backfire if they go to an extreme level of slamming the other companies and the general public begins to think that they are becoming too mean and vindictive.

Apple is just trying to wipe the egg off of their collective faces. I understand why they're doing it, but I think they're starting to look a little petty. If your company is creating such innovative products, then you don't need to take swipes at your competitors. It's a little pathetic to me. But, when you take into the account the fact that Verizon (which serves as the carrier for Android phones) signed up over 150,000 more subscribers during the second quarter of 2010 than AT&T (which serves as the carrier for iPhones), I think Apple's running a little scared and it shows. It's just a shame to me because there are some areas where no one can compete with Apple. Period. The iPad is one, the iPod is another. Be happy with your complete dominance in the tablet and music player fields, Jobs, and start playing nice with other kids in the smartphone sandbox.

While Apple obviously has a strong following and produces fantastic products, I am conflicted over their decision to bring other companies into the debate about the iPhone reception issues. Obviously it was an attempt to take the heat off their problems and likely seen as a smart PR move, but it was a bit shady. Can I say if I was in their position I would handle it differently? I don't know. I really think that for the first time in a while they were put in a situation where they didn't know what to do. The iPhone revolution up to that point was amazing, leading them into unfamiliar waters when one product was released with a major defect. I know competitors are pretty livid over their brand names being brought into the discussion and I think that is completely valid. At this point, if a similar phone had the same issues, the public would have brought that up long ago. For Apple to point the finger to others likely was not a good move, but perhaps their ego is large enough to not care.
