What do you think is the reason for Zack Greinke's drop in numbers this season?

In 2009, Zack Greinke was one of the most dominant pitchers in the league, especially at the beginning of the season. He had a W-L record of 16-8, and led the majors in ERA at a clip of 2.16. He was also 3rd in strikeouts with 242. However, this year has not been as kind to Greinke. His record is an awful 1-7 so far, with a 3.60 ERA and only 60 Ks. What happened to Zack Greinke?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'd say he just had a career best season last year. If you look at the numbers of the course of his career, his win and loss record is 55-61. His earned run average is 3.73. His best season prior to 2009 was in 2008 when he won 13, lost 10 and had an earned run average of 3.47. So far this year, he is 5-8 with an earned run average of 3.71. He has two complete games, on pace for nearly 200 strikeouts for the season and has only 22 walks in 119 innings.

He hasn't gotten the run support, I suppose this season with a losing record despite a very respectable earned run average. He was scratched from his most reason start due to some shoulder discomfort, which may be something to watch for the remainder of the season. But if Zack Greinke continues at his current pace, he'll be close to matching his career numbers. Matching what he did in 2009 will be very difficult in any season. He could do it, but that might have been a career season for him.

I'd say the absolute lack of run support has gotten to him. He is trying to be too perfect and when you get in that mindset it wears on you and you break down.
