I think a vast number of blogs are created and then abandoned in a short space of time. So the average lifespan is probably a month or less.
According to Technorati of the 133m blogs it has indexed, only 7m had updated withing the last three months.

What makes a good blog is having something to say that is worth people's while to read. Of course there are a zillion different ways to do that.
