Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Discussion threads that I have heard include the possibility that we now recognise a far wider range of symptoms as being part of the autisitic spectrum than in earlier times. As well as greater recognition of the range of the spectrum (it is not just a singular form)we are also more aware of the possibility of autism. Perhaps some previous sufferers were merely labelled as "odd" or "difficult".
There is also the possibility that as "research shows that genetic factors are important" perhaps more people with autism spectrum disorders are having children.
As our world becomes more dependent on people who can function with technology rather than simply on personal interaction, people with autism become more socially desired.
The following scenario may have some degree of relevance. Someone with the poor social skills associated with autism spectrum may very well be extremely effective with computers. They go on to make a great deal of money and become an eligible bachelor. From there they marry and pass on the genes to their children. The evidence for this scenario is anecdotal so far but with the growth of techno companies it may prove to be true. Perhaps the future will be run by those with autism.

Milk and the fact that pharmaceutical companies have developed expensive "treatment" prescriptions that cost hundreds per month.

When I was a kid, each class had the "sensitive" kid and the "hyper" kid. Now everyone has a label and quite frankly I'm sick of it.

Quite simply I think it is our massive exposure to heavy metals (especially mercury) through food and vaccines.

The link to vaccines has been discredited by dozens of studies

quote
(Feb 2, 2010) The medical journal which originally published the research linking autism and MMR vaccine has now issued a full retraction of the paper. The Lancet says claims made by the researchers were "false". It comes after Dr Andrew Wakefield, the lead researcher in the 1998 paper, was ruled last week to have broken research rules by the General Medical Council. The publication caused vaccination rates to plummet, resulting in a rise in measles.end quote

Also, there is no evidence special diets causing autism

More diagnosis does not necessarily mean that there are more instances. Autism seems to be the new ADD in the realm of popular parental alarmist sentiment. And please give the whole picture when throwing out statistics. Like real numbers. What was the starting number nine years ago? What is the actual number of cases now? What percentage of the entire population do these numbers represent? How much has the total number of students in the high schools increased? From research I've read the verdict is still way way out on the issue of autism.
