What do you think about, when I say "Denmark"?

Simply what do you think about when I say the country Denmark. (I live in Denmark so could be fun to find out if you actually know where it is or what we are populare for)
Tip for best answer: M$1.65
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When I think of Denmark, I think of...
  • Tivoli Gardens
  • Lego
  • Denmark's world class badminton players
  • The little mermaid
  • Carlsberg beer
  • Vikings
  • Hans Christian Andersen
  • Soren Kierkegaard
  • Niels Bohr
  • and a rather funny Danish film I just recently saw called Kinaman.

Yes, Hamlet - as in 'There is something rotten in..." then...

The fjords, Norway and beautiful geography and country, then...

the name Dane - I've always loved that name...nice given name :)

then...the Great Dane (the dog breed) and then...

the latest Dane to hit the star light...: Caroline Wozniacki

How lucky you are to live in such a wonderful place!

Hamlet (Yes, I know it's really British, but I'm a lit person, it just pops in right away...)
Danishes (cherry!)

Sorry, I feel guilty and am off for some proper research on Denmark now...

Maybe.... *looks it up* Apparently while Holland is most famous for them.. Denmark does produce wooden shoes as well.. so I wasn't entirely off though i think I am mixing Denmark and Sweden in my head.

Let's just say all Scandinavian countries rock and leave it at that.

I know this word does not have much to do specifically (there is some history there) with Denmark but when I see the word "Denmark" I see the word "Telemark" like Telemark Skiing.

Heineken, The Golden Beer of Danish Kings
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
Pastry that we Americans call "Danish," (but it wouldn't surprise me if you don't even have them there).

When I think of Denmark I think of a 17 year old foreign exchange student.
I think of Peter Larkin he was from Denmark and my Niece had him as a pen pal for a long time and talked me into sponsoring him and allowing him to come and live with me for a year while he studied here in the United States.
His father owned some sort of factory there and I really enjoyed his company and my niece was thrilled and made a lifetime friend. I learned a lot from him about your country in that year. I haven't spoken to him in 10 years now but that is what I think of.

The first thing I'd think of is probably the Danish Comedienne Sandi Toksvig

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tW-jx6QstI

I have no idea how well know she is in Denmark, but she's quite well known in the UK, and has done everything from Childrens TV, sitcoms, radio, etc...

And of course Carlsberg.. Probably the best sponsors in the world

I hadn't heard of her either, it appears she is essentially a British comedienne who was born in Denmark.

Haha it is funny, I have actually never heard the name Sandi Toksvig. But maybe it is just me.

She started off doing a saturday morning children's TV program in the 1980s called number 73 in which she hosted it as a character called Ethel.

Since then she's actually been quite proud of her Danish nationality. She hosts a program on BBC Radio 4 called The News Quiz which is the British equivalent of 'Wait Wait don't tell me' in America of NPR. She's recently made a point of trying to include Danish stories or references wherever possible.
