"As seen by data posted by TechCrunch, Tumblr has definitely had a recent surge in popularity over the Summer and continuing steadily into the Fall. The question is, how can you take advantage of this recent surge in Tumblr use in order to garner more exposure for yourself or business?
1.) Inform your existing userbase of your Tumblr blog
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is especially critical if you typically have a userbase of younger readers, “childess college kids & college graduates” seem to be the main source of Tumblr’s pageviews (according to Alexa).
Make no mistake, Tumblr is here to stay, and based off some solid advice of those knowledgable in social media (I am specifically referencing Steve Rubel on why he switched to a tumblelog) it appears that tumblelogs have great potential to take over the medium of personal blogging, especially for the masses.
This is why your first step should be to inform your existing audience (be they big or small) about your Tumblr, to show that you are ahead of the curve and willing to branch your content out into developing platforms before they are already successfully established (although since Tumblr has recently passed TypePad in usage & broken into the Web’s Top 100, it’s rise to prominence may not be that far off!)
2.) Add a manual ‘ReBlog This’ button to your posts
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One feature currently lacking in Tumblr (or made by a third-party) is the ability to ReBlog posts that are not posts made on a Tumblr page. This will probably roll out in the future, but for now, you can create your own ‘ReBlog This’ feature manually, and better yet, it will direct users to your personal Tumblr!
The way to do this is by posting Links (a category of Tumblr post) on your Tumblr page everytime you post an article. You should name the link the title of your article, and put the URL to the corresponding URL of said article, obviously.
Then, you simply add the words ‘ReBlog This On Tumblr’ to the end of your posts and have it link to the Tumblr link you made above.
Sound a tad confusing? If you aren’t familiar with Tumblr, I will demonstrate.
This is a link to this article on Tumblr. If you are a Tumblr user, you would see (in the top right hand corner) a small logo with the words “ReBlog This”, which all Tumblr users can access. So by linking users to your post on Tumblr, they still have to manually ReBlog your post by clicking the icon I mentioned, and once they do, a link to your article will be displayed to all of their followers.
The only work you have to do is to make sure your article titles are intriguing enough to click on! But you are probably doing that already!
3.) Post interesting images you use in your article on your Tumblr
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another way to take advantage of Tumblr is to take advantage of the fact that Tumblr users love to ReBlog photos, it is by far the most ReBlogged type of post on the site.
Do you ever create any images for your posts? If you do, you can take advantage of said image in another way, besides just posting it in your original article:
Post that image individually on Tumblr!
If you have an interesting, self-made (or self-taken via camera) image, it is best to post it directly to your Tumblr and have it linking back to your page, because as I’ve gone over, Internet users often do not credit images properly.
This this fact remains unwaveringly true, it is best to post and credit your images on Tumblr yourself rather than having them downloaded and posted by somebody else, who would than be gaining ReBlogs over your content!
