What do you think about Poland? Do you know any stereotypes about it?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I was in Warsaw on business a few years ago and I really liked the unspoiled nature of the city and the people. Because it had been entirely rebuilt after World War II, I expected it would be totally dreary and charmless, but the reconstructed Old Town (Stare Miasto) and New Town (Nowe Miasto) are amazing replicas, and even many of the building in other parts of the city have a human scale not normally associated with Communist-era structures.

The Polish people that I know can seem outwardly somber, but are friendly and have a very wry sense of humor. And know how to have a good time.

As you asked, the stereotypes that Americans and Brits (I'm both) have of Poland are:
- Polish people have a dour demeanor
- Polish people drink a lot, especially vodka (even by British standards)
- Polish food is bland (even by British standards)
- Polish people are patriotic
- Polish people have vowel-starved names, like Zbigniew_Rybczyński

In my experience:
- Polish people have a lot of respect for education and hard work
- Polish cuisine is excellent when done right

However, the names are still torturous for me!

What a hilarious question... the stereotypes, not the opinion about Poland. Have you ever heard of dumb pollock jokes? My family was Polish, but that was three generations back. My Grandfater knows so many dumb pollock jokes that he could probably offend the whole country.

Seriously, though, I think most polish stereotypes are generations old, but that may be based on my own upbringing. It seems like it's a fairly obscure culture because of the size of the population. Stereotypes probably vary based on individuals' personal experience.
