What do you think about Microsofts new search tool Bing?

Google executives are taking a close look at Bing since Microsoft released it in early June. What are your thoughs on the new search site?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well I'm still yet to see an explanation of the hideous logo but I think as a search engine it's pretty damn good, albeit 10 years late.

Web search is decent. In terms of result quality I'd place it ahead of Yahoo!, a close second to Google. The advanced search is nicely implemented -- refining a search is a much more intuitive process than with Google -- you can narrow results further by keyword, language, site and country.

Image search is actually better than anything I've seen before. They've foregone pagination and in place have an infinite scrolling concept -- as you scroll down the page more results appear. You can choose a smaller thumbnail size and have many more results visible than Google. And finally they have some really smart filters -- searching for people? show pictures that are face only, head and shoulders, or 'other'.

Obviously the real question is how do they market this effectively. And effective it will need to be -- habits are hard to break after all. This is probably why it has been reported that Microsoft are going to spend $80 - $100 million dollars on a launch campaign.

There was a study recently that showed that if you take the branding off the search, 2/3rd of people prefer Yahoo... but as soon as you put the brand back on, 2/3rd are using Google.

So while Bing may even be superior (subject to debate) I don't see it overtaking Google anytime soon - or even presenting any real challenge.
