When I did finally end it with said person, it was a valuable learning experience, but it would have been better had I not had to learn that lesson, as they say "the hard way."

But honestly, when I think about it, I have a different answer - I regret the three times in my life that I hurt someone important to me. Whether it was a girl I dated who got dumped before she knew what was really going on, or a college friend who dropped off my radar after she quit school no matter how much we promised we'd stay in touch, or my lifelong long distance friend who after 15 years upset me so much that I screamed at her (via letter, no less) that I didn't want to have anything to do with her anymore.
Those are the ones that haunt me. Those are the ones that periodically catch me saying, "I hope that someday I can make that right again." That's pretty much the definition of regret, right there, if you ask me.
