M$A key tenet in Buddhism is the Law of Karma which basically asserts each one of us will be appropriately rewarded for the good karma we have scored during our life and punished for the bad karma we are carrying. So each of us, whether he is Buddhist or believes in any other Faith or is an Atheist or whatever else is able through a proper understanding of this condition and by obedience to the right path break the chain of his or her own Karma and make progress towards NIRVANA.
This can be best summarised in that the path to our deliverance is through :-
a. MORALITY (sila),
b. MEDITATION (samadhi) &
c. WISDOM ((panna).
all as set out in the EIGHTFOLD PATH. By practicing those, you can each progress to all ENLIGHTENMENT and towards NIRVANA. .But any thought, words or actions which are rooted in greed, hatred and delusion lead you away from Nirvana and put bad karma on you. So that will cause as more suffering and instead of Nirvana you will be reborn on earth or in some other world for a new life of suffering! The more bad karma you have the greater the suffering you have after your rebirth.
You ask how does Buddhist belief differ from belief in a God. Basically Buddhists believe our life is by evolution as is every creation on earth and do not believe in a God. Even though some of the morality of the Buddhist faith may appear to have clear similarity with morality in God believing r Faiths like the ten commandments, teachings of Jesus or the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, the fundamental difference between God believing religions and Buddhism is in the former all that is needed is to believe and do as you are told! This includes such as by the wording of the Bible or Quran otherwise you are destined for hell and eternity.
Thus some interpretations of belief in God make people, for example, kill other human beings in a suicide bombing with the slogan "God is Great"because that is what they believe their Religion's doctrines says they should do to get into paradise, or in another Faith it is God's will to fight in the Crusades and kill heretics anf schismatics who threaten Catholic unity and oppose the papacy!.
But in Buddhism to know what is right or wrong you have to develop your own deep self awareness and self understanding. To understand if something is good or bad the Buddhist considers 3 things:-
a. The intention
b. The effect the act will have on yourself &
c. The effect it will have on others.
These three concepts are not always part of the thought process of people in God believing religions in their day to day activities.
But in Buddhists learn in themselves to understand if your intention is good in being rooted in giving love and wisdom, if it helps you to be more giving, more loving and wiser and if it helps others to be more loving and wiser, then your deeds and actions are wholesome, good and moral. But if your intentions are bad and your action helps neither yourself nor others, your action is bad . So you acquire bad karma and are led further away from Nirvana and into more suffering.
The five precepts are the basis of Buddhist morality. the first of these is to avoid killing or harming living beings, the second to avoid stealing, the third to avoid sexual misconduct, the fourth to avoid telling lies and the fifth to avoid alcoholic drink and recreational drugs.
I could try to explain a lot more but trust that is adequate to gives a reasonably clear understandable summary of the fundamentals of Buddhism and creating an interest in learning more in your own quest to find Enlightenment?
