Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the liver
First of all we need our livers.. hence the name.. Liver
Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the liver is what happens to the liver after it has metabolized too much alcohol for too long a period of time. Once cirrhotic, a liver is permanently damaged and cannot be repaired. Scar tissue replaces the healthy liver cells and although the liver will create new cells to replace the damaged ones these new cells form within the scar tissue and are unable to filter the blood. Transplanted livers are the best treatment for badly damaged livers but being that a liver with alcoholic cirrhosis has been damaged by the patient themselves usually a transplant is not likely.
One can prevent alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver by drinking in moderation or just not consuming alcohol at all. Cirrhosis of the liver can be caused by Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or Cryptogenic cirrhosis (not identifiable cause) or a variety of other causes but over processing of alcohol is the number one cause of alcoholic cirrhosis. 10% to 20% of heavy drinkers will have livers that become cirrhotic after 10 to 15 years of heavy drinking.
