What do you know about a greyhound dog? Specifically, what do you know about a retired racing greyhound?

I was sharing a house with a good friend who decided to adopt a Greyhound.
I was ecstatic for her and worried at the same time. She didn't have as much experience with dog behavior as I did, but she had an open heart.
The one thing I worried about was helping a dog who had only seen his kennel and track his entire life, learn to cope with simple household things that we wouldn't give a second thought to.
His name was Train. He was a goof ball. The kitchen had a slick floor and he was afraid of it. We bought these carpet runners and laid them in the kitchen. We called them 'Train Tracks'.
He adjusted beautifully. He loved my two Chihuahua's that always gave him grief. He slept with our cat and became a great member of the household... even though he was a big sissy.
The most important thing I learned about Greyhounds is that when they are happy... they smile.
They show their teeth. Not many other breeds do this... so it can look confusing at first.
Train would push open my door every morning, put his cold nose under my blanket and wake me up with a surprise. When I would lift my head up with a start... he would lift his lips and smile at me. He even made a sound with air through his nose. I was certain it was a dog version of a chuckle.
If dogs took over the world, Greyhounds would be the best comedians!

M$There are countless more adoption agencies on google, just simply type in "Greyhound rescue" and where you live!

M$you have some very good facts and information. They are big, loving and lovable couch potatoes.
What type of injuries do you think they have from the track that shorten their lives? I have never heard that before.
I have heard about the small animal issue before but have yet to see evidence of it as all the greyhounds that I know of either live with or have been around small animals and have not had any issues. Did you read about that somewhere?
My aunts dog had to be put down I think because he was raced with a torn ligament and it caused him a great deal of pain. I've never seen evidence of them not being good with smaller animals (my aunt had a cat at the same time, but the cat usually avoided the dog anyway), but I'm basing that claim just on the fact that they're bred to hunt smaller animals, and some may have the tendancy to keep chasing them.

Adorable.Thank you for sharing.
I never connected it but my roommates greyhound smiled too. It was terrified of the household cat. Terrified lol.
They sure do look weird doing it, but it's the cutest thing... ever!
