What do you do when you have a cold? Why?

I usually stick to sudafed and drink at least a quart of OJ a day - hydration, vitamin C and decongestion.

When I get sick or have a cold, I quickly get into a melancholy funk. So besides the "plenty of fluids" and "rest" and "hot tea with honey", I make sure to give myself consistent doses of "funny". I'll watch a some comedy shows on TV, or a funny movie, and make sure that my bed side book is full of humor.
Giggling heals me faster than anything else.
Recommended dose: 2 titters, 1 guffaw and 5 giggles.

I take Luden's cherry drops for the sore throat, and I use Vick's Vapo-Rub to keep the congestion down.

I try to be a little active, just so I don't vegetate in bed for a few days straight. My idea of being "active" when I have a bad cold is to sit up in bed and do crosswords, or knit, or just watch TV.

And I send text messages to my family members, threatening to sneeze on them if they don't bring me some nice soup. :)

I personally would freak out like a madman and scream OMG #Swineflu HELP MEEE Then collapse on the floor for a few seconds. Roll around, then get up like nothing happened and go "False alarm."

I try not to take medication unless my symptoms get too bad. Medication only helps symptoms and don't cure the cold.
I sleep as much as I can. Sleep boosts your immune system.
Drink lots of fluids especially water and cranberry juice (because of the vitamin C).
I make sure I take my vitamins.
Keep my distance from my friends and family so I don't infect them.

Interesting. I could see how that might help. I had a friend that would swear by soup with chinese hot mustard every time she got a cold.

Spicy! Definitely clears up my sinuses.

The best advice that I always follow is for any illness is to get plenty of rest, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids so you do not get dehydrated. It may sound crazy, but usually it is best to not take anything to stifle coughing or sneezing, as this is how your body fights off the infective organism. Fever also is a way for the body to fight off whatever organism is causing the infection, and a fever should be left alone to a certain extent. If however you have a very high fever, then this is something that needs to be seen by a doctor immediately. A multivitamin is helpful, but I would not take more than the recommended daily allowance. The most important thing to not spread infection, is proper handwashing especially after you sneeze if droplets come in contact with your hands.

I understand. I am not looking for advice. The question is about your personal practice.

I find the biggest cup I have, fill it with water, and drink myself well. It gets irritating to go to the bathroom so much, but nothing makes me feel better quicker. I have some OJ or Gatorade in between glasses here and there. Then I play video games or watch TV until I'm too tired, and then I lie in bed and listen to my ipod until I'm finally about to drop off. :) Sick days do have their benefits.

When I have a cold, I take Sudafed decongestant pills. It helps me breathe and function during the day. I am also able to sleep better with the medicine too. I try to drink a lot too because they say drinking a lot of fluids helps. I get as much sleep as I can to help me get better.

I used to have severe allergies, so I learned to hit colds hard as soon as I got them. My methods may seem odd and radical, but they work pretty well for me! It's rare anymore that I have cold symptoms longer than a day or two.

First, the best way to fight them is prevention. I wash my hands; I wash everything. I drink kombucha and take coconut oil. Kombucha has loads of B vitamins, which helps your immune system by helping your energy level. According to several studies I've posted here before, including one from the CDC, the lauric acid content of coconut oil is high (average 57%), and lauric acid is know to strip the coating from enveloped viruses, including the one that causes colds.

If I haven't been doing one or other of the above for whatever reason, then I do other things. I've found a tiny bit of coconut oil in my nose where I get the ticklish reflexive sneezing that starts many of my colds will make it stop, and then I just never get the cold past that point. Zycam swabs will do nearly the same thing, but not quite as fast.

Cold MD helps knock it out before very long, too, particularly the original formulation (which was herbal). My parents swear by taking vitamin C until it causes diarrhea. My dad, a pharmacist, was told to try this by a doctor friend of his. I've tried it. It works, but it's not pleasant. But better than having a cold.

Another friend of mine says to take B-complex every hour until symptoms subside. It also works, but not as quickly as vitamin C or coconut oil or Zycam.

If a cold does manage to take cold, then I drink Yogi Tea: either Breathe Deep if it's causing chest congestion, or Cold Season if it's at that sneezing/fever/achiness stage, or Throat Coat if my throat is sore. Sometimes I rotate them, a different one every hour.

Honey has been shown to be as effective as cough syrup, so I've tried that as well.

Real Chinese Hot and Sour Soup is very good for you, especially during a cold, if it's made with bone broth especially. There are things in bone broth that fight viruses. The protein in the broth and meat and egg helps; the hot peppers can clear the sinuses and sooth the throat; the vinegar is anti-microbial. And the combined woodear mushrooms, onions and garlic are very good for the heart, according to a study reviewed in the early 90's in Health magazine.

And then I try to mimic a localized fever by placing the hottest hot water bottle I can stand on the swollen glands in my neck. I also stay down, instead of masking my symptoms and trying to soldier on. My allergies used to be severe and life-threatening, and it was essential that I not let a cold progress at all. I find that now, taking an afternoon and evening to fight it, I can be good as new as soon as the next day.
