What do you do when you have a cold? Why?

M$I try to be a little active, just so I don't vegetate in bed for a few days straight. My idea of being "active" when I have a bad cold is to sit up in bed and do crosswords, or knit, or just watch TV.
And I send text messages to my family members, threatening to sneeze on them if they don't bring me some nice soup. :)

M$I sleep as much as I can. Sleep boosts your immune system.
Drink lots of fluids especially water and cranberry juice (because of the vitamin C).
I make sure I take my vitamins.
Keep my distance from my friends and family so I don't infect them.

M$First, the best way to fight them is prevention. I wash my hands; I wash everything. I drink kombucha and take coconut oil. Kombucha has loads of B vitamins, which helps your immune system by helping your energy level. According to several studies I've posted here before, including one from the CDC, the lauric acid content of coconut oil is high (average 57%), and lauric acid is know to strip the coating from enveloped viruses, including the one that causes colds.
If I haven't been doing one or other of the above for whatever reason, then I do other things. I've found a tiny bit of coconut oil in my nose where I get the ticklish reflexive sneezing that starts many of my colds will make it stop, and then I just never get the cold past that point. Zycam swabs will do nearly the same thing, but not quite as fast.
Cold MD helps knock it out before very long, too, particularly the original formulation (which was herbal). My parents swear by taking vitamin C until it causes diarrhea. My dad, a pharmacist, was told to try this by a doctor friend of his. I've tried it. It works, but it's not pleasant. But better than having a cold.
Another friend of mine says to take B-complex every hour until symptoms subside. It also works, but not as quickly as vitamin C or coconut oil or Zycam.
If a cold does manage to take cold, then I drink Yogi Tea: either Breathe Deep if it's causing chest congestion, or Cold Season if it's at that sneezing/fever/achiness stage, or Throat Coat if my throat is sore. Sometimes I rotate them, a different one every hour.
Honey has been shown to be as effective as cough syrup, so I've tried that as well.
Real Chinese Hot and Sour Soup is very good for you, especially during a cold, if it's made with bone broth especially. There are things in bone broth that fight viruses. The protein in the broth and meat and egg helps; the hot peppers can clear the sinuses and sooth the throat; the vinegar is anti-microbial. And the combined woodear mushrooms, onions and garlic are very good for the heart, according to a study reviewed in the early 90's in Health magazine.
And then I try to mimic a localized fever by placing the hottest hot water bottle I can stand on the swollen glands in my neck. I also stay down, instead of masking my symptoms and trying to soldier on. My allergies used to be severe and life-threatening, and it was essential that I not let a cold progress at all. I find that now, taking an afternoon and evening to fight it, I can be good as new as soon as the next day.
